Digital Photography

Most of the photographs in these pages were shot with a Canon EOS 20d digital SLR with a variety of lenses ranging from Sigma 10-22mm to Sigma 170-500mm telephoto. I have no real preference for Sigma, I have some Canon lenses too, but being a full-time student I have to buy mainly second-hand equipment and Sigma lenses have proved worthy, reliable and greatly more affordable accessories. The Canon 50mm f1.8 lens, retailing for about £60 really does prove a worthy optical companion.

In the same regard, I use digital purely for convenience - despite things improving out of all recognition, even since purchasing the EOS 20d, I am still not convinced that the digital sensor can compete with more expensive film - say Fuji Velvia and especially medium format - and the enjoyment and satisfaction gained from watching a carefully exposed shot coming to life in a darkroom is something Photoshop can never be a substitute for. Digital does, however, make more economical sense.

The immediacy of digital is also a major benefit but displaying photographs on a computer screen has its disadvantages. Opening a sleeve full of larger than life prints is still the way to view photographs. With little exception, the quality of the print is the same to any beholder. However, a great photograph can prove very disappointing when viewed on a computer display. Regardless of cost, computer monitors (even identical makes and models) display a huge variation in colour depth, actual contrast ratio and dot pitch - too many variables to consider when processing images. Therefore, all the photographs included in this web site are also available to see as a mounted print and some are available for sale upon enquiry.
